If you have been wanting to learn kickboxing, but haven't been able to hear in a regular class, give Fat-Burning Kickboxing Workout for Dummies a try! Led by veteran instructor Keli Roberts, this DVD offers a thorough 17-minute tutorial that covers all of the basics, followed by a 35-minute cardiovascular routine using the moves and combinations in the instructional segment.

The familiar Dummies icons--Remember, Caution, Jargon Alert, and Tip--appear frequently to give extra advice during the workout. While the icon material does not mask the captions, you will need to read both at the same time, so previewing the DVD is a good idea. The captions themselves are free of typos, and well-synchronized with the action. Unlike some other captioned DVDs, the introduction is also captioned, so receiving full benefit from the dialogue is possible in this production.

In the tutorial, Roberts gives detailed instruction on upper- and lower-body kickboxing moves including roundhouse, front, side, and back kicks, knee thrusts, hooks, cross punches, and upper cuts. Roberts emphasizes technique--"You flick that leg out..." on the roundhouse kick--and coordinating breathing with body movements--"Exhale strongly each time you throw that punch..." as she teaches the cross. She demonstrates each move slowly, after which you follow along and then increase the tempo. If you are new to kickboxing, take your time with the tutorial; using proper form will let you get the most out of the workout while minimizing the risk of injury. For experienced kickboxers, the instruction is a great refresher.

The main workout consists of a warm-up, three fat-burning segments, and a cool-down that focuses on shoulder and leg stretches. The first fat-burning segment is eight minutes long, and stresses upper body moves such as jabs and hooks. The short, six-minute middle section works the lower body with lots of kicks in easy combinations. And the longer third workout combines all moves in an 11-minute session that is effective and fun; it will leave you feeling energized and accomplished in a new fitness routine. Also, each segment offers basic and challenge options, so you can increase or decrease the intensity to suit your fitness level and goals.

Roberts is the solo cast member in this DVD, giving the sense that you are having a private lesson from a great teacher who really wants you to enjoy the routines and to benefit from the instruction. The set is pastel walls surrounding a polished wood floor; it's a long way atmospherically from a gym, and less intimidating because of its softness. No equipment is necessary other than a good pair of athletic shoes.

Home exercisers with hip or knee problems may find kickboxing to be aggravating, and every user should consult her or his physician before using this or any other exercise program or equipment. Once you get the green light, Fat-Burning Kickboxing Workout for Dummies will have you sweating in an enjoyable, fast-moving, and enlightening way!
